December 10th Leeds, England – the afternoon
After a break for lunch we went to Grimes Dyke Primary School where Althea is a school governor. Year 6 (10-11 year olds) were having a celebration day (V.E. Day) to mark the end of their project on World War II. Althea said V.E. Day is “Victory in Europe Day” to celebrate the end of the Second World War in Europe.
War time food made by parents was set up on tresstle tables. There was bread and butter pudding, jam sandwiches, spam sandwiches, sponge cakes, jellies and much much more. They were trying to create the feeling of what it was like to eat on a special occasion at the end of the second world war. Rationing had not finished so this was especially special.
