Adapting Bible stories for younger children

Honeycomb Adventures Press, LLC, takes Bible literacy very seriously. Sadly, many parents don’t know the Bible well enough to teach it to their children. For many, all they know is what they learned from Bible storybooks as children, and these typically only skimmed a few key points of the story to hold the attention of the youngest children. For this reason, even though the stories are told simply in child-friendly language, HAP books are written for the parents as well as for the children. HAP maintains that Bible stories are fascinating, and children have sufficient curiosity to want to know the whole story, given a chance to learn it.

Honeycomb Adventures books are written to appeal to children ages 6-12. Children at this age have a better chance at reading the books independently or sitting still to hear it read aloud.

Yet Bible stories are timeless, and creative parents can use these picture books with younger children as well. Rather than attempt to read the books word for word to your younger children, familiarize yourself with the story as it relates to each picture. Then in storyteller fashion, you can relate the story in your own words for your younger audience. Talk to young children about the pictures, share the highlights of the story, and let it be a fun adventure. If you are excited about the story, they will be too. Let the children’s questions help guide the telling and re-telling of the story as the child grows. Before you know it they will be ready to listen to the whole story—and they might correct you if you leave something out.
