God is Able

While driving today I heard the following song on the radio and it brought back memories of a time when my future was spiraling out of control. I remembered hearing the song “He is Able” in a worship service and how it helped me to cling to the hope that only God could give me at that fearful time.

I can only imagine the worries of the thousands who have lost their homes in the recent tornadoes that left their many paths of destruction across the United States this April. Perhaps this song will bring some encouragement to them as well.

At the risk of sounding trite I wish to offer that same hope to the many who are struggling with this disaster – or with other disasters that may have come into the paths of my readers. God IS able.

God is in control of what happens. He doesn’t will pain and hardship in our lives, but he uses the pain and hardship that comes our way to make us strong.

Life on earth is not about us, nor is it about today or tomorrow. Life on earth is but a breath in comparison with eternity. The purpose of life is to give us the opportunity to develop a relationship with the very God who created us, that same God who gave his Son Jesus to us to suffer at our own hands and to die a wretched death on a cross to carry our sin debt to the grave in our place, the same God who wants to share eternity with us in heaven.

 If we look at God as the Master Magician who will fix all our problems and circumstances and make life easier for us, we are missing the point. On the other hand, God wants us to prosper, to have a hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) If we will choose to follow his plan for our lives, to choose to grow through our circumstances instead of fighting them, to put growing in our relationship to God above fixing our circumstances, then we will overcome any and all obstacles on God’s timetable.

I suppose this is easier for me to see as a senior citizen. When I was young I thought of all those years ahead of me. Looking back I think of much wasted time and effort when I tried to manipulate and fix my circumstances. Even when I looked to Jesus, I was looking for my “fix” more than my relationship. This is not an easy lesson to learn, but I am convinced that learning it is what life is all about.
